Tillandsia Usneoides Bromeliads
Old mans beard, Spanish moss or Grandfathers beard are all common names for Tillandsia usneoides. Most people have seen it growing in gardens where its ease of care makes it a welcome addition. It has fine white-grey leaves that can grow with some green when regularly watered. It does not suffer from pest problems and its fine structure is difficult to damage in storms and harsh weather.
This strictly epiphytic bromeliad does not require actual attachment to its log or tree. It can easily be draped over branches, caught or rough bark or hung on a hook.
To promote faster growth this plant can be sprayed with very dilute fertiliser periodically and well watered several times a week in warmer months. Spanish moss prefers a bright shady aspect.
Propagation is as easy as taking a piece of the mother plants and transferring it to its new position. This makes it a plant easily shared between home gardeners.
