Watering Your Bromeliads
Bromeliads like water, but not so much that rot will occur. Many
receive their moisture through the leaves with roots being used more as
an anchor than a water collecting function. With many being epiphytes moisture is not naturally plentiful at their root zone. Moisture is available when it rains or when
fog lays down a fine layer of dew.
.For
potted and garden bromeliads water should not be added to the root zone
daily. Instead the plant should be watered then given enough time to
dry until just moist. This may mean watering 1-3 times per week and
even fortnightly in winter time. Free draining media is essential to
ensure the roots do not end up drowning in a pool of liquid.
If
you have bromeliads attached to trees, rocks or pieces of wood then a
watering schedule of 2-3 times per week will be suitable for many such
broms. Soak the root zone and leaves liberally each time. If the plant
can be moved then you may even give them a weekly bath for an extra big
drink
